Education

The philosophy section offers compulsory and elective courses in philosophy for all engineering programmes at Delft University of Technology. The section participates in the master program "Philosophy of Science, Technology & Society" , that is hosted by the philosophy department of te University of Twente, and in the PhD Program "Ethics & Technology".

The aim of our teaching is to foster within the students a reflective attitude ('critical thinking') with regard to engineering practice, to the consequences of technology for society and to the moral and social responsibility of engineers. We also aim to impart cognitive skills and knowledge required for arriving at informed judgments and decisions on issues that are at stake. The main fields of teaching are:

• Ethics and engineering
• Philosophy of science
• Philosophy of technology

With regard to ethics and engineering, the board of the university has charged the section with teaching obligatory courses in this field for all engineering programmes of the university.
